Toeslagenschandaal duwt Mario (30) in studieschuld van 70.000 euro: 'Het is onrechtvaardig' 07.02.2026

Mario, 30, is left with a €70,000 student debt due to the Dutch childcare benefits scandal (toeslagenschandaal). His mother, a single parent of five, was wrongly accused of fraud by the Tax Administration, plunging the family into debt and poverty. As the eldest son, Mario took out student loans not just for his education but also to contribute financially to his household, helping his mother keep the family afloat and avoid eviction. While his mother has since received compensation, Mario has not, despite a report by five children's and youth ombudsmen highlighting how thousands of young people are structurally disadvantaged by the scandal, often leading to study delays and significant debts. The ombudsmen advocate for recognition and debt relief for these affected youths, a change Mario believes is just and necessary.
