Toilette putzen: Diese vier Fehler machen fast alle – und schaden mehr als sie nützen 22.02.2026

Cleaning the toilet incorrectly can lead to the spread of germs or even poisoning, with experts identifying four common mistakes to avoid. Mixing cleaning products, particularly acid-based cleaners with chlorine-based disinfectants, can release toxic chlorine gas, posing a serious health risk according to the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA). Neglecting to clean the toilet brush allows germs to accumulate and be redistributed. Flushing the toilet with the lid open creates an aerosol effect, known as "toilet plume," which can spread fecal particles and germs up to 1.5 meters, as demonstrated by studies from the University of Colorado and highlighted by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Finally, cleaning the toilet too infrequently and in the wrong order, starting from the inside and moving outwards, can also contribute to germ spread.
