Top BJP leader's aide shot dead in violence after Indian state election 07.05.2026

Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead on Wednesday night in West Bengal following the party's historic election victory. Rath's murder has heightened tensions in the eastern state, where at least three people have been killed since election results were announced on Monday. The BJP secured a landslide win, ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule, but post-poll violence has been reported across various districts, with both parties accusing each other of perpetrating attacks, arson, and vandalism. Police have arrested over 400 individuals in connection with election-related violence and are investigating Rath's death, which occurred amidst a backdrop of heightened political rivalry and allegations of voter roll manipulation.
