Top Texas election official to resign ahead of November elections 04.06.2026

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson announced her resignation, effective July 17, after three and a half years in the role, just four months before the crucial November elections. Appointed by Governor Greg Abbott, Nelson, who previously served 30 years in the Texas Senate and chaired the Senate Finance Committee, oversaw seven statewide elections, managing the casting of approximately 27 million ballots. Her tenure also included efforts to enhance election integrity through grant disbursements and the development of a military ballot-security initiative. Governor Abbott thanked Nelson for her service, calling her an "extraordinary" secretary of state, but has yet to announce her successor, leaving a vacancy in the state's top election official position.
