Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), also known as red skin syndrome, is a debilitating condition affecting a growing number of individuals who have used steroid creams for eczema. Patients like Bethany Gamble, Henry Jones, and Karishma Leckraz report severe skin inflammation, cracking, oozing, and intense itching, often leading to significant physical and psychological distress, including inability to work or socialize. Despite widespread documentation on social media, with #TSW videos garnering over a billion views on TikTok, TSW remains under-researched, with some medical professionals struggling to diagnose or treat it, often misattributing symptoms to eczema flares. Professor Sara Brown at the University of Edinburgh is leading the first UK study funded by the National Eczema Society to investigate the unexplainable patterns observed in TSW patients, analyzing symptoms, saliva, and skin biopsies. While the Medicines and Health Regulatory Authority recognized TSW as a severe reaction to steroid creams in 2021, it is still considered rare, leaving many patients facing long waits for specialist care and limited treatment options, though some are exploring therapies like Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) or biologics.
