Tornadoes kill 17 in central China as Typhoon Bavi looms offshore 07.07.2026

Severe weather, including tornadoes and intense thunderstorms, has caused at least 17 deaths and hundreds of injuries across central China. In Guangxi province, flooding from Typhoon Maysak has killed six people and left 11 missing, necessitating the evacuation of 130,000 residents as 40 rivers overflow. Meanwhile, Hubei province reported 11 fatalities and over 300 injuries due to extreme winds and a powerful tornado in Huanggang that lifted trucks 30 meters into the air. President Xi Jinping has ordered "all-out" rescue efforts to assist those affected. These disasters occur as China prepares for Super Typhoon Bavi, which recently impacted Guam and the Northern Marianas with winds reaching 180mph. Bavi is expected to make landfall on China's eastern coast by Thursday, potentially bringing further heavy rain and destructive winds to the region.
