Tourist spots in Europe hit by fires as Greece warns of toxic smoke 13h ago

Wildfires are currently ravaging popular tourist destinations across Europe, specifically impacting Portugal, Greece, and Spain. In central Portugal's Vouzela area, a massive blaze has scorched 12,000 hectares, prompting international reinforcements from Spain and Italy to assist over 1,200 firefighters. Meanwhile, in Spain's Girona region, a wildfire has consumed nearly 2,200 hectares. Greece is facing severe threats as well; a fire at a recycling plant near Thessaloniki has released toxic smoke, forcing residents to stay indoors and triggering evacuations for several suburbs. Additionally, a large blaze in the Mandra area west of Athens has deployed 210 firefighters and 29 aircraft. Authorities noted that approximately 85% of Greek wildfires are caused by human negligence. As climate change exacerbates these risks, Greece is increasingly utilizing satellite technology to monitor and combat these devastating seasonal blazes.
