Touristen toben über neues Verbot auf Urlaubsinsel: „Könnt ihr den Leuten nicht vorschreiben“ 19.02.2026

New regulations have been implemented in Medewi, Bali, a popular surfing destination, restricting beginner surfers and those using softboards from accessing certain areas, including the well-known Point and Outside sections. This decision, made by local surfer community representatives, mandates that beginners must be accompanied by a surf instructor, with a maximum of two beginners per instructor, to prevent accidents and bolster the local surfing community. The changes aim to enhance safety, particularly after a surfer's death last year due to a boat collision. While many in the surfing community support the new rules, some tourists have voiced strong opposition, criticizing the restrictions as overly controlling. Bali, which welcomed over 6.9 million international tourists in 2025, is grappling with the challenges of mass tourism and the impact of foreign surf schools.
