A young adult died and three others were injured when a large tree collapsed onto multiple shacks in the Makausi informal settlement, Germiston, during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Emergency services from the City of Ekurhuleni, including firefighters from Primrose, Bedfordview, and Edenvale stations, responded at approximately 2:29 am. Rescue teams found two young adults trapped under a heavy branch; one regained consciousness after being freed, but the second victim was pronounced deceased at the scene despite on-scene medical treatment. The three other individuals sustained minor injuries and were transported to a medical facility. The cause remains undetermined and is under investigation, occurring amid a period of heavy rainfall in Gauteng.
