Bundesinnenminister Alexander Dobrindt hat sich gegen Forderungen nach einem Ende der deutschen Grenzkontrollen an den Binnengrenzen des Schengenraums ausgesprochen. Er argumentiert, dass diese Kontrollen eine positive Wirkung auf das Migrationsgeschehen in Deutschland und Europa hatten und daher aufrechterhalten werden müssten. Dobrindt räumte zwar ein, dass die Kontrollen im Zuge der neuen EU-Migrationsreformen, des Gemeinsamen Europäischen Asylsystems (GEAS), flexibel weiterentwickelt werden, betonte aber deren fortwährende Notwendigkeit. Die EU-Kommission hatte Deutschland und acht weitere Staaten aufgefordert, die Binnengrenzkontrollen zu beenden, da das GEAS primär Kontrollen an den EU-Außengrenzen vorsieht und Binnenkontrollen nur als letztes Mittel bei außergewöhnlichen Umständen erlaubt sind. Dobrindt forderte zunächst eine Verbesserung des EU-Außengrenzschutzes, bevor über ein Ende der Binnenkontrollen entschieden werden könne. EU-Innenkommissar Magnus Brunner hat sich hingegen für ein schrittweises Ende der Binnengrenzkontrollen ausgesprochen, um die Funktionsfähigkeit von Schengen zu gewährleisten.
