Troubles au Mexique : la mort d’El Mencho, une victoire pour la présidente Claudia Sheinbaum 23.02.2026

The Mexican army has killed Nemesio Oseguera, alias "El Mencho," the 59-year-old leader of the powerful and violent Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), in an operation supported by the United States. This significant victory for President Claudia Sheinbaum comes amid pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding drug trafficking, particularly the synthetic drug fentanyl, for which El Mencho's cartel was a major supplier. The U.S. had placed a $15 million bounty on his head. In response to his death, the CJNG initiated retaliatory "narcoblockades" with burning vehicles in several regions, causing widespread panic and leading to the closure of schools and businesses in western Mexico, including Guadalajara, which is set to host World Cup matches in June.
