Illegal immigrant truck driver charged in death of trooper who moved home to care for mom with cancer 04.07.2026

A fatal crash in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, has resulted in the death of veteran State Police trooper Michael E. Pahira Jr., who was conducting a commercial vehicle inspection on Interstate 81. The driver, 33-year-old Michael Bon, a Haitian national, has been charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless driving. Bon had entered the U.S. via humanitarian parole in 2024, but his status was terminated in June 2025, leading to an order to leave the country which he ignored. Despite this, he obtained a non-domiciled commercial driver's license in Massachusetts. This incident follows a series of fatal accidents involving noncitizen drivers, prompting Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to push for "Delilah's Law" and stricter CDL regulations. The Department of Transportation is currently withholding federal funds from states that fail to revoke licenses from ineligible drivers to ensure highway safety.
