The Trump administration has refunded around $100 billion (€86.6bn) in "Liberation Day" tariffs to businesses through customs officials, according to recent court documents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This accounts for approximately 60% of all tariffs collected under this initiative, which totaled around $165 billion (€143bn). The refunds follow a February U.S. Supreme Court 6-3 ruling that President Trump had acted beyond Congress's tax-setting authority and had no constitutional power to impose these import taxes. The tariffs were originally imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a 1977 law granting the president broad discretion to regulate trade during emergencies, but the Court found this authority did not extend to imposing tariffs.
