Trump makes it easier to fire 8,000 federal workers 04.06.2026

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a new classification, Schedule Policy/Career, which removes civil service protections from approximately 8,000 senior federal policy workers, making them at-will employees. This action allows federal agencies to terminate these employees, including directors, chiefs of staffs, senior advisers, and policy analysts, without adhering to standard procedural requirements for poor performance, misconduct, or policy disagreements. The move, aimed at increasing accountability and facilitating the execution of presidential policies, is viewed by critics as a politicization of federal employment. This initiative revives a similar effort from Trump's previous term, which was reversed by President Biden. Several lawsuits have been filed challenging the reclassification, with opponents arguing it could harm essential government services.
