Tummy tucks and breast reductions: Complications after overseas surgeries cost NHS £1.8 million 07.07.2026

A study by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reveals that the NHS has spent approximately £1.8 million between September 2022 and 2024 treating complications from overseas cosmetic surgeries. The cost per patient is estimated between £5,883 and £9,328. The research, which analyzed nearly 200 cases, found that nearly half of patients returning from abroad faced serious issues like sepsis, tissue necrosis, and splitting wounds. Turkey was identified as the source for 76% of these complications, with tummy tucks being the most frequent procedure involved. Surgeons warned that patients often undergo multiple simultaneous procedures or fly home prematurely, leaving the NHS to manage life-threatening emergencies. Experts emphasize that while medical tourism offers lower prices, the lack of follow-up care and high-risk surgical decisions often results in significant financial and physical burdens for UK healthcare services.
