Tamil Nadu government formation LIVE: TVK chief Vijay stakes claim to form government in meeting with governor 06.05.2026

On May 6, 2024, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and staked a claim to form the government following the April 23 assembly elections. TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member assembly but fell short of the majority mark. The Congress party, which won 5 seats, extended full support to TVK, conditional on excluding "communal forces" that do not believe in the Constitution of India, taking the combined tally to 113 seats, still four short of majority. AIADMK's potential backing remains uncertain, with spokesperson Kovai Sathyan stating the decision rests with the high command. Vijay termed the result a "historic and transformative mandate" driven by youth, and preparations are underway for his likely May 7 oath-taking at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.
