Two Britons held in Turkey with 20kg cannabis after Thailand trip 07.05.2026

Two British nationals were arrested at Istanbul Airport on April 26, 2026, upon their return from Thailand, after Turkish customs discovered approximately 20 kilograms of cannabis concealed within vacuum-sealed packaging in one of their suitcases. The couple, reported to be in their 20s, were subsequently placed in pre-trial detention. British officials confirmed they are providing consular support to the detained individuals and their families, while also communicating with Turkish authorities. This incident follows Thailand's decriminalization of cannabis in 2022, which has been linked to an increase in drug seizures at UK airports, prompting repeated warnings from British authorities against travelers attempting to bring the substance home.
