Two drones from Russia crash in Latvia, army says 07.05.2026

Overnight, multiple drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia, with two ultimately crashing within the country. One of these downed drones ignited a brief fire at an oil depot in Rezekne, in eastern Latvia, though firefighters quickly contained the blaze. Latvian authorities, part of the EU and NATO, noted that such incidents are possible as long as Russia's aggression against Ukraine continues, suggesting it could be a result of testing NATO's response. This event follows similar drone incursions into Latvian and Estonian airspace in March and contributes to broader European concerns about drone flyovers into NATO territory, which previously prompted plans for a "drone wall" and the deployment of anti-drone systems.
