Two virologists, a Dutchman named Vincent Munster and a Cameroonian named Claude Kwe, working for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States, were indicted by the American justice system on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. They are accused of attempting to import the mpox virus, formerly monkeypox, into the United States. In January, the two researchers were apprehended at Detroit airport upon their return from Congo-Brazzaville with 113 vials, 17 of which contained deactivated mpox virus, according to the FBI. The two men, who work in a P4 level laboratory in Montana, are also being prosecuted for lying about the contents of their luggage and face up to five years in prison.
