Ugandan opposition leader campaigns in flak jacket 14.01.2026

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, was seen campaigning in Mukono wearing a flak jacket and helmet amidst a heavy military presence in the capital, Kampala. This precautionary measure comes as the nation approaches the January 15 presidential election, where Wine is challenging incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986. The election is marked by a history of Museveni altering rules to maintain his leadership, including the removal of term and age limits, and the sidelining of rivals. Wine has previously experienced significant police action and arrests of his supporters during his 2021 presidential bid, with President Museveni having publicly endorsed the use of tear gas against what he termed "the criminal opposition."
