UK summons senior Iranian diplomat over stabbing of Iranian journalist in London 07.07.2026

The British government has officially summoned Iran's Chargé d’Affaires in London following the sentencing of two Romanian nationals for the stabbing of journalist Pouria Zeraati. In June 2026, Woolwich Crown Court convicted Nandito Badea, 21, and George Stana, 25, for the March 2024 attack near Zeraati's Wimbledon home. The men received prison sentences of eight and 12 years, respectively. Prosecutors successfully argued that the duo acted as proxies for the Iranian government, a conclusion supported by the presiding judge. The British Foreign Office characterized the assault as an act carried out on behalf of the Iranian state, citing a pattern of hostile intelligence activities on UK soil. While the Iranian embassy rejected these allegations as politically motivated and unfounded, the UK maintains that such actions against individuals on British territory are unacceptable violations of national sovereignty.
