Ukraine War: Trump offers mediation following talks with Putin and Zelenskyy 05.07.2026

Following intensive discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump has offered to mediate to end the war in Ukraine. In a nearly 90-minute telephone call with Putin, Trump reaffirmed his readiness for a swift end to the fighting, occurring in the context of the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey. During a conversation with Trump, Zelenskyy emphasized the decisive importance of American resolve for a potential peace settlement. While Russia seeks a diplomatic solution that takes its own positions into account, Ukraine has rejected Russian claims regarding military successes, such as the capture of Kostyantynivka. Additionally, Zelenskyy spoke with Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the consequences of Russian attacks and German support for air defense. The discussions between the heads of state are expected to continue during the NATO summit.
