Ukrainian foreign minister calls for dialogue with Poland over army unit name 03.06.2026

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for dialogue with Poland to ease tensions arising from Ukraine's renaming of a special forces unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The UPA is remembered in Poland for its involvement in the Volhynia massacres of 1943-1945, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 100,000 Poles. This historical dispute has strained relations between the two nations, despite Poland's strong support for Ukraine following Russia's 2022 invasion. Sybiha emphasized that escalating tensions serve neither country and stressed the importance of focusing on the common threat posed by Russia, urging mutual understanding and openness to discuss difficult historical issues. He stated the unit's name was chosen by soldiers to honor those fighting "imperial Moscow" and denied any anti-Polish intent.
