Three former sports facilities in Umbilo, eThekwini Municipality’s Ward 33—Congella Sports Club, Frere Tennis Club, and Ray Keyte Tennis Club—are in a state of severe disrepair and have been taken over by criminals and homeless individuals. Councillor Fran Kristopher highlighted during a May 2026 council meeting that these dilapidated facilities are no longer serving the community and pose a significant threat to residents and businesses. Despite proposals for partnerships to upgrade and maintain these sites, which have been neglected for over a decade, no action has been taken. The Director of Parks and Recreation, Dr. Sphiwe Ndlovu, cited budget limitations for the lack of necessary improvements, stating that condition assessments are underway to develop a prioritized maintenance plan. While the department is open to lease proposals, a coordinated effort is deemed necessary to address the illegal occupation of these spaces.
