UN chief Guterres presents options for future Lebanon presence 02.06.2026

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed three distinct options for a continued uniformed UN presence in Lebanon, following the expiration of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate at the end of the year. In a letter to the UN Security Council, Guterres outlined scenarios ranging from a limited observer force of 350 personnel to a more robust mission with up to 5,525 troops, emphasizing the deteriorating situation in Lebanon since March. All options necessitate a uniformed presence to support a strengthened UN political mission aimed at resolving the conflict. The proposals detail varying troop numbers and capabilities for monitoring the Blue Line and surrounding areas, with Guterres also highlighting the need for air assets, de-mining, and advanced technological support for any future mission.
