UN elects five new non-permanent Security Council members 04.06.2026

On Wednesday, Austria, Portugal, Kyrgyzstan, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Kyrgyzstan secured its seat after a competitive four rounds of voting in the Asia-Pacific Group, replacing Pakistan. Austria and Portugal were elected to seats in the Western European and Others Group, taking over from Greece and Denmark, while Germany was unsuccessful. Zimbabwe will fill the African Group seat vacated by Somalia, and Trinidad and Tobago will represent the Latin American and Caribbean Group, replacing Panama. These five nations are set to commence their two-year terms on January 1, 2027, concluding on December 31, 2028.
