Nearly 900 Rohingya refugees dead, missing in shipwrecks in 2025: UN 17.04.2026

The year 2025 marked a grim record for Rohingya refugees undertaking perilous sea journeys, with nearly 900 reported dead or missing in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal, according to a UN statement on Friday. This represents the deadliest year on record for these routes, where one in seven of the over 6,500 Rohingya who attempted sea crossings in 2025 were lost, indicating the highest mortality rate globally for refugee and migrant sea journeys. The ongoing conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state, coupled with reduced humanitarian aid and insecurity in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar camps, are pushing refugees towards these dangerous voyages, as evidenced by over 2,800 attempting crossings between January and April 13 of the current year, and a recent shipwreck that left an estimated 250 missing.
