UN Secretary General Calls for Global Ban On AI ‘Killer Robots’ 07.07.2026

During the first-ever Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva on Monday, UN Secretary General António Guterres called for a global ban on AI-powered "killer robots." Guterres described the development of autonomous weapons as "morally repugnant," emphasizing that decisions regarding taking human life must remain strictly under human control. This plea aligns with recent ethical warnings from Pope Leo XIV regarding the sanctity of life in warfare. While some proponents argue AI could reduce civilian casualties or maintain a strategic edge against adversaries like China and Russia, others fear an uncontrollable arms race. The debate is complicated by internal Silicon Valley conflicts, such as Anthropic's legal battle with the U.S. government, and President Trump's vow to accelerate AI use in military domains. Advocates warn that opaque decision-making processes in autonomous systems could eventually lead to a total loss of human control.
