UN warns of resurgence of violence in South Sudan following massacre 03.03.2026

The United Nations has expressed grave concern over a massacre in South Sudan's Abiemnhom, Ruweng administrative zone, where at least 169 people were killed and buried in a mass grave. Local officials attribute the Sunday morning attack, which involved armed Nuer youths from Mayom County, to intercommunal violence amidst escalating political instability. The provisional death toll includes 79 soldiers and police officers, with Doctors Without Borders treating 80 wounded at a nearby hospital. UNMISS peacekeepers sheltered nearly 1,000 civilians, and the South Sudanese government condemned the "barbaric attack," promising an investigation. This incident occurs as the UN notes a sharp resurgence of violence nationwide, particularly in Jonglei state, displacing hundreds of thousands and disrupting humanitarian aid.
