The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a warning that El Niño conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific and are forecast to strengthen rapidly into a strong event between July and September. The UN agency's monthly Global Seasonal Climate Update indicates a rapid development, with El Niño expected to reach the third-highest level out of four classifications. This will fuel the likelihood of extreme weather events, including drought, heavy rainfall, heatwaves on land, and marine heatwaves in many regions.
