A rare and significant snowstorm impacted over 40 million people across the northeastern United States on Monday, February 23, 2026, bringing up to 90 cm of snow and wind gusts of 90 km/h in some areas. New York City experienced 40-50 cm of snow with more expected, while Providence, Rhode Island, recorded 83 cm. Eight states, including New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, declared a state of emergency due to the storm, which also caused widespread power outages affecting approximately 570,000 homes, with over 285,000 in Massachusetts. Over 6,000 flights were canceled by mid-afternoon, and public transportation faced significant disruptions, with non-essential vehicle traffic banned in New York City. Despite the severe weather, New York City's mayor confirmed no reported deaths directly linked to the storm in public spaces.
