Uni academic admits she used AI to write opinion piece in defence of AI 03.06.2026

Western Sydney University has confirmed that a pro vice-chancellor, Professor Cath Ellis, used artificial intelligence to author an opinion piece defending AI's role in higher education, which was published by The Sydney Morning Herald. Ellis, a leader in academic integrity, reportedly fed 40,000 words of her own research into a Copilot Large Language Model to generate initial drafts. The university stated this demonstrated a sophisticated use of generative AI, drawing on her extensive expertise and aligning with WSU's "human-centred AI" approach. The Sydney Morning Herald has since removed the article, citing a lack of disclosure regarding the AI's involvement and a breach of their editorial standards which prohibit AI-written stories for publication.
