Union leaders demand deeper reforms after MEC's Wentworth Hospital inspection 07.05.2026

KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane conducted an unannounced, late-night inspection of Wentworth Hospital on Tuesday following numerous public complaints. She expressed serious concern over healthcare services and management issues, experiencing firsthand the challenges reported by the public. The MEC has directed hospital management to submit an urgent turnaround plan, with HOD Penny Msimango and district management signaling imminent intervention. Union leaders, Nehawu and Denosa, while welcoming the visit, emphasized the need for fundamental reforms addressing severe understaffing, infrastructure backlogs, and operational difficulties to improve patient care and working conditions. The DA also highlighted existing concerns, including access issues and alleged security misconduct.
