University rushes ICE alert system months before deadline after pressure from far-left students 07.05.2026

The University of Oregon has accelerated the implementation of a campus-wide alert system to notify students of nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity, making it operational on Wednesday. This decision, prompted by significant pressure from student groups, including the university's chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Anti-ICE Coalition, comes months before the mandated September deadline set by Oregon House Bill 4709. The bill, signed into law in April, requires educational institutions to establish such notification systems. Student activists argued that the original deadline created a security gap for students present on campus over the summer. The university stated that the ICE alert will utilize its existing emergency alert infrastructure, requiring verification from campus police and legal counsel before dissemination.
