University students now key target of online scams in Perak, say police as 61 cases reported this year 05.05.2026

Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin reported that 61 online fraud cases targeting university students occurred between January and April 2024, resulting in total financial losses of RM303,372.36. Speaking at Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Seri Iskandar on May 5, Nordin highlighted that students have become the primary demographic for scammers utilizing phone calls, e-commerce schemes, fake investments, and fraudulent loans. To combat this rising trend, the Perak police partnered with the university to launch the "Module On The Current Trends of Commercial Crimes." This initiative aims to educate students on evolving digital threats and empower them to act as advocates for crime prevention within their communities, emphasizing that commercial fraud remains a serious, pervasive threat regardless of an individual's social status.
