‘Unparalleled discovery’: Gold Roman ring unearthed 04.06.2026

A former soldier and amateur metal detectorist, Kevin Minto, discovered an exceptional gold Roman ring in Somerset, England, dating to a tumultuous period in the 3rd century. The unusually large ring, weighing 48 grams, features a gemstone engraved with the goddess Victory on a chariot and is believed to have belonged to a wealthy Roman inhabitant. Minto found the ring in 2018 near Ilminster, in a field where he had previously unearthed Roman coins. The South West Heritage Trust acquired the artifact for £78,010, a sum split between Minto and the landowner. The ring, described as a "unique" and "unparalleled discovery" for Britain, will eventually be displayed at The Museum of Somerset after being showcased to local schoolchildren.
