‘Unpopular reforms, not IMF, can bail out Sri Lanka’ 03.07.2026

At CA Sri Lanka's 5th Annual Economic and Tax Symposium, Advocata Institute CEO Dhananath Fernando argued that Sri Lanka does not need to secure another IMF program if the government uses its "unprecedented mandate" to implement critical structural reforms. While acknowledging that the country has regained macroeconomic stability through painful adjustments, Fernando warned that returning to the IMF would simply "kick the can down the road" and defer underlying weaknesses. He emphasized that the solution lies within Sri Lanka's own territory, not in external rescues.
