Following the killing of notorious drug lord Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel, by the Mexican army in Tapalpa, Jalisco, violent unrest erupted across several Mexican states. Band members ignited vehicles and blocked over 20 roads in Jalisco, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to call for calm. The US, which had offered a $15 million reward for El Mencho, collaborated with Mexican authorities in the operation that also resulted in six cartel members killed and three soldiers injured. Consequently, US and Canadian citizens were advised to seek safety, and North American airlines like United, Southwest, and Air Canada canceled or rerouted flights to cities including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, with major public events and in-person schooling in Jalisco also being suspended.
