US ally answers Trump's call on Strait of Hormuz: 'Part of a diplomatic effort' 02.06.2026

Romania has responded to President Trump's call for allied support in the Middle East by permitting the U.S. to utilize its military bases for defensive activities, specifically mentioning air refueling, as part of an effort to ensure common defense and diplomatically reopen the Strait of Hormuz amidst rising tensions with Iran. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Ţoiu emphasized that Bucharest is not engaging in war but is committed to mutual reliance among allies and is actively participating in diplomatic initiatives. This action aligns with Trump's persistent requests for European allies to enhance defense spending and bolster global security, particularly maritime security in critical shipping routes. Ţoiu also highlighted Romania's commitment to increasing its own defense budget to 3.4% of GDP, a significant rise from its previous 2%.
