US has let in 4,499 refugees since October - all but three were South African 14h ago

Since October 2025, the United States has resettled 4,499 refugees, with an overwhelming majority, 4,496, being South African, and only three from Afghanistan. This significant shift in refugee admissions follows President Donald Trump's policy changes, which prioritize Afrikaner South Africans and other perceived victims of discrimination, a move justified by the administration as enhancing national security and public safety. This contrasts sharply with the Biden administration's previous fiscal year, which admitted 125,000 refugees from 85 countries. The prioritization of Afrikaner refugees has led to diplomatic tensions with South Africa, which has objected to the characterization of its citizens and criticized the claims of white genocide as unsubstantiated. The first group of South African refugees arrived in May of the previous year, with a notable surge in arrivals during February and March of the current year, and Texas has received the largest number of resettled individuals.
