U.S. launches "self-defense strikes" on Iran, says warships came under fire 08.05.2026

U.S. forces launched "self-defense strikes" on two Iranian ports, Bandar Abbas and Qeshm, on Thursday after three U.S. Navy destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz came under missile and drone fire. The destroyers USS Truxtun, USS Mason, and USS Rafael Peralta were targeted but not struck. U.S. Central Command stated the strikes were in response to the Iranian aggression. Concurrently, the United Arab Emirates reported activating its air defense systems to intercept Iranian drones and missiles. President Trump described the U.S. strikes as a "love tap" and reiterated that the ceasefire remains in effect, while also warning of more severe action if a deal with Iran is not reached. The conflict has impacted oil prices, with Brent crude hovering around $100 a barrel, and has led to approximately 1,500 ships being trapped in the Persian Gulf.
