US launches wave of strikes in Somalia targeting ISIS, al-Shabab terror threats 14.01.2026

In January, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) intensified airstrikes in Somalia, targeting both al-Shabab and the local Islamic State affiliate (ISIS-Somalia). These operations, conducted in coordination with the Somali federal government, aim to degrade the groups' capacity to threaten U.S. interests and the homeland. Strikes against al-Shabab occurred near Buur Heybo on January 8 and in coordination with Somali authorities on January 3-4. Airstrikes against ISIS-Somalia were reported on January 11 and 9 in the Golis Mountains region of Puntland. This wave of strikes represents an escalation, with AFRICOM reporting 38 strikes between February 1 and June 10, 2025, against these groups.
