The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced on Monday the launch of custom versions of Grok and ChatGPT on its secure AI platform, GenAI.mil, which is cleared for sensitive but unclassified information. The platform, which initially launched last year with Google Gemini, has now onboarded over 1.7 million unique users out of the department's more than 3 million personnel. The DoD stated that Starshield AI's Grok for Government will provide warfighters with productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity, and more secure collaboration, leveraging SpaceX's secure satellite network. Grok's capabilities include deep-thinking inference, adaptive reasoning modes, customizable workspaces, and reusable playbooks to scale institutional knowledge. ChatGPT Mil, on the other hand, is designed for document-heavy tasks such as planning, policy, logistics, and administration, aiming to speed up routine tasks and free up time for critical projects. The DoD emphasized that offering multiple models helps avoid vendor lock-in, a concern highlighted by its ongoing feud with Anthropic. Notably, Claude is the only major AI model missing from GenAI.mil. Earlier this year, negotiations between Anthropic and the DoD collapsed over language allowing the use of Anthropic's technology for "any lawful purpose," particularly concerning domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. The Trump administration subsequently designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, leading to legal challenges. A federal judge recently ruled that the government's actions constituted unlawful retaliation, violating Anthropic's First Amendment rights.
