TradeTrump could slap Australia with 12.5% tariff for allegedly importing goods made by slave labour 03.06.2026

The Trump administration is threatening to impose a 12.5% tariff on Australian imports, alleging the country has failed to prevent goods made with slave labor from entering its market. This move affects 54 economies, with six others facing a 10% tariff, as part of an investigation by US trade representative Jamieson Greer into global practices. Greer stated that American workers should not compete on an uneven playing field due to the importation of forced labor goods. Australia's government, through a spokesperson for Trade Minister Don Farrell, disputes these findings, asserting the country has strong legislation against forced labor and modern slavery, and considers any tariffs unjustified and contrary to their free trade agreement. The US is accepting feedback on these proposed tariffs until July 6, giving Australia a chance to argue for an exemption. This action follows the US Supreme Court striking down previous global tariffs, to which President Trump responded with temporary sanctions expiring July 24.
