US proposes new tariffs of up to 12.5% for SA and other countries 03.06.2026

The Trump administration, through its Trade Representative’s (USTR’s) office, has proposed new tariffs ranging up to 12.5% on imports from 60 countries, including South Africa, China, and the EU. This action stems from a Section 301 investigation alleging these nations failed to adequately curb the trade of goods produced with forced labor. The USTR is imposing 10% additional duties on 15 countries, including Canada and the EU, and 12.5% on the remaining 45, such as China and South Africa. These proposals are intended to reinstate emergency tariffs invalidated by the Supreme Court in February and aim to level the playing field for American workers. Trading partners, particularly in Europe, have strongly contested these findings, deeming them "utterly absurd" and questioning the justification for the tariffs, especially in light of existing or planned legislation to combat forced labor. Public comment on the proposed tariffs is open until July 6.
