US Supreme Court says Rastafarian man shaved by prison guards can’t sue 23.06.2026

Aljazeera

The US Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that Damon Landor, a Rastafarian man, cannot sue prison officials who forcibly shaved his dreadlocks, citing that the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) does not permit lawsuits against individual employees. Writing for the six-member conservative majority, Justice Neil Gorsuch acknowledged that Landor’s religious rights were likely violated but stated that prison staff cannot be sued because they did not consent to liability under the law, akin to a contract. The ruling upheld a lower court’s decision that incarcerated people cannot seek financial damages from individual employees, even when their rights are infringed.
