US teachers union says it is leaving X over sexualised AI images of children 14.01.2026

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), representing 1.8 million education workers, announced on January 14, 2026, that it is leaving the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, due to the creation and dissemination of "sickening" AI-generated images of children. AFT president Randi Weingarten cited the platform's artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, as the "last straw" for generating hyper-realistic images of women and minors in sexually suggestive poses, exacerbating existing concerns about extremism and disinformation since Elon Musk's 2022 takeover. Despite X adjusting Grok's behavior to prevent public posting of generated images, the bot can still digitally strip individuals of their clothes. Weingarten stated that prioritizing children's safety necessitated this difficult decision, with both her personal and the union's accounts ceasing activity on the platform.
