US Unsuccessfully Opposes Debate on Cuba Blockade at UN General Assembly 07.07.2026

The UN General Assembly approved, with 136 votes in favor, the holding of a debate requested by Cuba to discuss the end of the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States. The vote saw nine votes against, including the US, Argentina, Israel, Hungary, Paraguay, and Peru, along with 30 abstentions. During the session, an intense exchange of accusations occurred; the US Ambassador, Mike Waltz, denounced the existence of more than 800 political prisoners and criticized the Cuban regime's management of the energy crisis. For his part, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, accused Washington of spreading lies and violating the sovereignty of other states. Likewise, the European Union recognized the negative humanitarian impact of the blockade, while Colombia and Caribbean countries expressed their solidarity with the Cuban people.
