Valérie Glatigny takes measures against school dropout, opposition denounces the creation of a "two-tier school system" 07.07.2026

The Parliament of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels has approved a new draft decree aimed at adapting measures to combat school dropout, in accordance with the May 2024 reform. Led by Minister Valérie Glatigny (MR), this reform proposes major administrative simplification through a single tool for managing school attendance, thereby eliminating double data entry for institutions. The text also provides for an extension of the deadline for justifying absences to 10 days. However, the opposition, including the PS, Ecolo, and PTB, denounces a significant setback. Critics fear the creation of a "two-tier school system" and accuse the government of weakening student monitoring, notably by requiring consent from young adults for follow-up. The changes will take effect starting August 2026 for primary school and 2027 for secondary school.
