Netherlands faces 'test case' climate verdict over Caribbean island 21d ago

A Dutch court is set to rule on Wednesday in a significant climate justice case where residents of the Caribbean island of Bonaire, supported by Greenpeace, are suing the Dutch government. They demand more robust measures to protect the low-lying island from rising sea levels and extreme heat, citing a survey indicating up to a fifth of Bonaire could be submerged by century's end. The lawsuit follows an International Court of Justice advisory opinion stating states violating climate obligations commit unlawful acts. Campaigners seek a Bonaire protection plan by April 2027 and for the Netherlands to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2040, a decade earlier than the EU target. The Dutch government contends climate adaptation is a local responsibility, while residents describe the immediate impacts of climate change.
